Winter Life at Settlers: Warmth, Care & Community

Share

As the colder months set in, winter brings a different rhythm to life. Days are shorter, jackets heavier, and for many, there’s a natural pull to stay indoors. While winter can pose unique challenges for older adults, such as health concerns or feelings of isolation, it’s also a season where the advantages of village life truly shine.

In this blog, we’ll explore how Settlers Lifestyle Village (Settlers) makes winter not just manageable but genuinely enjoyable.

The Beauty of Cosy Freedom

One of the quiet joys of life at Settlers during winter is the freedom to live comfortably without the usual seasonal worries. There’s no need to think about clearing gutters, fixing leaks, or heating poorly insulated rooms.

Here, winter living is warm, secure, and maintenance-free. You can spend your days doing what you love, instead of what needs doing. You can spend your money on the things you enjoy, not on fixing what’s broken.

Whether it’s curling up with a good book in your cosy 1, 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, enjoying a warm meal at the on-site restaurant, or sharing a laugh with friends over coffee, winter at Settlers feels less like hibernation and more like a gentle exhale.

Support for Sickness Through the Winter

Being unwell is hard enough, but being unwell, isolated, and elderly is even harder. That’s another great benefit of living in a lifestyle village like ours. With on-site emergency nursing support available around the clock, our residents can take comfort in knowing that help is nearby if they need it. Our homes feature multiple call buttons, and our registered nurses are on site 24/7, ready and equipped to assist at a moment’s notice.

The peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re supported makes all the difference.

The Warmth You Can’t See

Of course, warmth isn’t just about heating—it’s about how you feel. Our village is known for its supportive culture where neighbours look out for one another. “Here, every other person stops to chat to you. It’s just so different,” says Barry, a resident. “There is always someone around that you can talk to.

Even when venturing outside is less appealing, our layout and facilities make it easy to enjoy the day without leaving the village. The onsite café and restaurant offer hearty, nutritious meals and warm beverages shared in good company. And for those who prefer a quiet moment, our beautifully maintained lounges and library provide peaceful retreats.

Helping Men Feel at Home

Winter can be particularly tough on senior men, many of whom find it more difficult to maintain or build social connections. Research has shown that older men are more likely to experience loneliness and isolation than women, which can lead to a decline in mental and physical health.

At Settlers, we understand these challenges and have created a community where men feel included, valued, and engaged. For those who are more reserved or adjusting after losing a partner, the transition into village life is gently supported.

Clark, one of the new men, he was like a duck out of water,” says Bev. “So we gave him a task at happy hour. Now he’s a different person—he moves around, collects the tickets, talks to everyone.”

This kind of thoughtful inclusion, along with male-friendly spaces like our purpose-built bloke’s shed, helps residents feel connected. Operated under the Menz Shed New Zealand guidelines, the shed is more than just a place for building—it’s a space where camaraderie grows.

There’s even a get-together for men once a week. No one is isolated,” says Bill. Ray adds, “Many blokes came in with their wives and said they didn’t want to come, but are glad they did.”

A Village with Years of Wisdom

Unlike newer communities still finding their identity, Settlers have spent years cultivating a rich culture of care, understanding, and connection. We’ve learned how to spot when someone might need extra support. And we’ve built a place where no one has to feel alone.

It’s in the helping hands, the shared stories, and the sense of belonging that turns cold months into comforting ones.
